If you’re trying to catch-up on the movies you missed throughout the year, the holidays are the perfect time to get through the long movies on your list if you have a break between Christmas and New Year’s.
These six long movies from 2023 all clock in close to or over three hours so get comfy.
Killers of the Flower Moon (206 minutes)
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon runs at a bum-numbing three hours and 26 minutes, but it’s not even the longest in his filmography. That honour goes to his 1999 documentary My Voyage to Italy, which is an epic four hours and six minutes!
With a solid cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone, along with an excellent script based off of David Grann’s book, the length of Killers of the Flower Moon is barely noticeable once you’re swept up in it. You can watch Killers of the Flower Moon in Canada on VOD platforms before it streams on Apple TV+ in the near future.
Oppenheimer (180 minutes)
Surpassing Interstellar‘s two hour and 49 minute runtime, Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s longest movie to date at an even three hours long. The film is a biopic of the “father of the atomic bomb”, J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) and also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, and Rami Malek.
Oppenheimer has a 93% critics score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s been nominated for eight Golden Globes and is sure to pick up an equal amount of Oscar nods. You can currently watch Oppenheimer in Canada on VOD platforms.
Beau Is Afraid (179 minutes)
From the writer-director of Midsommar and Hereditary, Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid runs two hours and 59 minutes long and is by far the weirdest film on this list.
Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the title character, the film is described as a “Kafkaesque odyssey”. Along with being Aster’s longest film to date, Beau Is Afraid is also the longest movie released by studio A24. You can watch Beau Is Afraid on Paramount+ Canada or on the free streaming service Kanopy.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (169 minutes)
Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour is not only the highest grossing concert film ever, it’s also one of the longest at two hours and 49 minutes! The extended version that’s available on VOD brings the running time to an even three hours (Swift’s live concert is roughly three hours and 15 minutes).
The concert is quite the production and the film captures the excitement of it perfectly. Even if you’re only a casual T-Swift fan it’s worth checking out for the spectacle of it. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is available to watch in Canada on VOD platforms for $19.89.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (163 minutes)
At two hours and 43 minutes, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the longest film in the Tom Cruise series so far. And if you’re a fan of the movies it won’t disappoint as it’s still a big, loud action flick.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One sends Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team on a mission to track down a new weapon that threatens all of humanity. Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby also star. You can watch Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in Canada on VOD platforms. It’s also available to buy on 4K Blu-ray.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (158 minutes)
This prequel to The Hunger Games has a running time of two hours and 38 minutes, edging out The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by 12 minutes to make it the longest in the series.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is set during the 10th Hunger Games and tells the story of a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) before he became President of Panem. Rachel Zegler, Viola Davis and Jason Schwartzman also star. You can watch The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes in Canada now on VOD platforms.
