If you prefer staying home and watching movies on New Year’s Eve instead of going to a party, you’re not alone. But they need to be fun movies that still make you feel like you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve.
Here are the movies we recommend watching on New Year’s Eve.
The Apartment (1960)
Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning 1960 film The Apartment is sometimes considered a Christmas movie, but it’s really a better watch on New Year’s Eve. Way ahead of its time, Jack Lemmon stars as an insurance clerk who lets the executives at his company use his apartment to have affairs. Shirley MacLaine and Fred MacMurray also star. Ocean’s Eleven (1960)
The original Ocean’s Eleven is set on New Year’s Eve as Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) gathers a team to rob five Las Vegas casinos before the night is over. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Angie Dickinson also star. Ocean’s Eleven is available to watch on VOD platforms in Canada.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Starring Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Carrie Fisher in arguably her greatest role, When Harry Met Sally is not just one of the best romcoms of all time, it also has a few great moments set on New Year’s Eve that makes it a worthy watch as you end the year. When Harry Met Sally is available to watch on VOD platforms.
Four Rooms (1995)
Set in a Hollywood hotel on New Year’s Eve, Four Rooms tells four different stories that are all connected by the character of Ted, the Bellhop (Tim Roth). Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Allison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell each wrote and directed a segment. Madonna, Jennifer Beals, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas and Bruce Willis star. Four Rooms is available on VOD platforms in Canada.
200 Cigarettes (1999)
This 1999 movie is set in New York City on New Year’s Eve 1981 and stars everyone from Ben Affleck and Paul Rudd to Dave Chappelle, Courtney Love and Kate Hudson. It’s an excellent film with an even better soundtrack and it will definitely make you wish you were there. 200 Cigarettes is unfortunately not available on any streaming service, but there is a decent copy uploaded to YouTube that you can find with a quick search.
New Year’s Eve (2011)
Similar to 200 Cigarettes, New Year’s Eve is set in New York City and has a huge ensemble cast that includes Sarah Jessica Parker, Zac Efron, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and many, many other big names. It’s a bit schlocky at times, but it’s also kind of a perfect movie to cap off the year with. New Year’s Eve is available to watch on Crave.
