The 2024 Golden Globes gifted Oppenheimer with five awards Sunday night, including one each for Cillian Murphy, Christopher Nolan, and Robert Downey Jr.
The awards also celebrated television from 2023 like the Netflix show Beef, which garnered three awards. Beef co-stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun set records for being the first Asian actors to win in the categories of best performance by an actress and actor in a limited series, anthology series, or motion picture made for television.
The annual award show began with a witty, yet friendly, introduction from its host, comedian Jo Koy. While Koy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to host, he also joked about the length of Oppenheimer (which is still shorter than Killers of the Flower Moon) and made sure to point out beloved actors in the audience, including Robert De Niro, who he congratulated for the impregnation of his girlfriend at 80 years of age saying it was the actor’s “best role yet.”
Koy’s humour wasn’t for everyone though, with some in the audience, including Taylor Swift, not looking amused with his monologue, and viewers on X saying he was “so, so awful” and calling him “the biggest lowlight of the night.”
One thing the 2024 Golden Globes tried to get across is that film is much more than sitting down with popcorn and watching the celebrities we love entertain us, and it’s more than a paycheque for those entertaining. It’s an experience for us all.
“I thought it’d be simpler accepting for myself, but standing here suddenly I realize as a director we can only accept [awards] on behalf of others,” Christopher Nolan said after winning his first Golden Globe for Best Director – Motion Picture. “As directors we bring people together and we try to get them to give their best.”
New awards handed out at the 2024 Golden Globes included one for cinematic and box office achievement, which went to Barbie, and one for best performance in stand-up comedy on television, which went to former Golden Globe host Ricky Gervais for his Netflix special Ricky Gervais: Armageddon.
