With the documentary on June Carter Cash coming to Paramount+ Canada next week, we thought it was a good time to recommend some of the best newer music documentaries we’ve recently watched.
It doesn’t matter if you like the bands or artists involved. If you are a fan of music you will get something out of these docs.

Beastie Boys Story (2020)
Directed by Spike Jonze and featuring Ad-Rock and Mike D, Beastie Boys Story takes an intimate and personal look at the Beastie Boys’ journey, exploring their rise to fame and their impact on hip-hop and pop culture. You can watch Beastie Boys Story on Apple TV+ in Canada.
Summer of Soul (2021)
This Oscar-winning documentary highlights the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a monumental event that celebrated Black music and culture. The Beatles: Get Back (2021)
The Beatles: Get Back is a three-part documentary series directed by Peter Jackson that features previously unseen footage and offers a fresh perspective on the iconic band’s dynamics, creativity, and the making of their final studio album, Let It Be. Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry (2021)
You might think a young artist like Billie Eilish doesn’t deserve a documentary yet, but Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry made us respect her and her career more than we already did. Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry is available to watch on Apple TV+ in Canada.
The Velvet Underground (2021)
Directed by Todd Haynes, this documentary provides a comprehensive and artistic exploration of The Velvet Underground. The film not only delves into the band’s music and impact on the music industry, but also examines the avant-garde art scene they were part of in New York City in the ’60s and ’70s.
