The Missed List is a roundup of movies and TV shows you should have watched at home last month but probably didn’t.
These are the March 2024 home releases we highly recommend checking out if you missed them.
American Fiction (Prime Video Canada)
After picking up the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, American Fiction is still not getting the proper promotion it deserves. The movie is a hilarious take on the Black entertainment that white people buy into, and is sadly pretty spot on. The performances by Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown are mesmerizing to watch and show just how well-versed both actors are. And for a first time director, Cord Jefferson has proven his talent and will hopefully have a long career ahead. American Fiction premiered on Prime Video Canada on March 8.
Davey & Jonesie’s Locker (Prime Video Canada)
If Loki was a high school comedy, it would be Davey & Jonesie’s Locker. This series, which is shot in Toronto, is very weird and will not be for everyone’s liking, but its two stars, Veronika Slowikowska (I Like Movies) and Jaelynn Thora Brooks (How We Ended Us), make it very enduring and extremely fun to watch. If you like dark, offbeat humour, you will be laughing the entire time as you binge this. All 10 episodes of the first season Davey & Jonesie’s Locker premiered on Prime Video Canada on March 22.
Lisa Frankenstein (VOD)
The latest movie from the mind of Diablo Cody, Lisa Frankenstein is like a mash-up of Heathers and Edward Scissorhands directed by John Hughes. It really nails the ’80s nostalgia, and Kathryn Newton (Freaky) carries the entire film perfectly. Lisa Frankenstein is currently available on VOD platforms.
STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces (Apple TV+)
STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces is an excellent look at Steve Martin’s career broken down by his early life and rise to fame in stand-up comedy in the first part, and his life in movies in the second part. Whether you’re a fan of Martin or not, it’s an interesting look at the life of one of the most accomplished actors and comedians working today. STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces premiered on Apple TV+ on March 29.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More (Netflix)
After Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, Netflix released The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, which included two additional short films tied into one full-length anthology movie. All based off of Road Dahl stories, the film is shot in typical Anderson style and feels more like a stage production than a movie. It has a great cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, and Dev Patel, and is definitely some of Anderson’s best work. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More was released on Netflix Canada on March 15.
