Here is the top finance news and events for the week of April 8 – 12, 2024.
The entire week
- Canadian & European interest rate decisions will dominate this week. A long-awaited rate decrease may be on the horizon and markets will be watching.
- Gold has been on a strong bullish trend since the beginning of March. Investors will be looking to predict how far this will go.
Wednesday, April 10
- U.S. Consumer Price Index – 8:30 a.m.: Three sets of data released by the Bureau of Labour Statistics showing the relative change in price for consumer goods and services. This report is a good insight into the state of inflation and the direction it tends to be heading.
- Bank of Canada Interest Rate & Monetary Policy Statement – 9:45 a.m.: Key interest rates set by central banks affect most levels of finance and economic health either directly or indirectly. All eyes will be watching for a rate change and/or clues to any upcoming changes, as well as sentiment on economic health. This is followed by a press conference at 10:30 a.m.
- FOMC Meeting Minutes – 2 p.m.: An in depth record of the Fed’s previous meeting. This information gives further clues into the decision-making process and the sentiment towards economic policy and interest rate changes.
Thursday, April 11
- European Central Bank – Refinancing Rate & Policy Statement – 8:15 a.m.: This is the interest rate set for the EU and the majority of liquidity for the banking system. This is followed by a press conference at 8:45 a.m.
- U.S. Producer Price Index – 8:30 a.m.: Similar to the CPI data released earlier in the week, this data shows the change in price for finished goods and services sold by producers. Once again a window into inflation trends.
- U.S. Unemployment Claims – 8:30 a.m.: The weekly number of people filing for unemployment. An obvious indicator of employment conditions and overall economic health.
- U.S. 30 Year Bond Auction – 1 p.m.: Besides the value of government bonds, this shows insight into investors’’ sentiment on future interest rates.
Friday, April 12
- UK GDP – 2 a.m.: This monthly data shows the Gross Domestic Product of the United Kingdom. This is the highest data that begins to tell the overall economic status of a country.
