Here is the top finance news and events for the week of March 11 – 15, 2024.
Tuesday, March 12
- UK Unemployment Change – 3 a.m.: The change month over month in the number of individuals making jobless claims. An obvious indication of economic health and tends to be strongly connected to consumer spending power.
- U.S. Consumer Price Index – 8:30 a.m.: Three different sets of data are released; two monthly CPI numbers, and one an annual figure. This is the change in average prices of consumer goods. An important number tied very directly to inflation.
- U.S. 10 Year Bond Auction – 1 p.m.: The yield numbers can be used to gauge investors’ overall outlook on future interest rates. A very good insight into investor sentiment.
- Mega Millions lottery draw – 11 p.m.: Tuesday’s Mega Millions lottery jackpot is an estimated $735 million US. Find out how you can play Mega Millions in Canada.
Wednesday, March 13
- UK GDP – 3 a.m.: Gross Domestic Product is one of the most high level numbers that lends insight into the overall health of the British economy.
- U.S. 30 Year Bond Auction – 1 p.m.: The yield numbers can be used to gauge investors’ overall outlook on future interest rates. Perhaps not as useful as the shorter term bonds, it still gives us a window into overall investor sentiment and confidence (or lack thereof) in the U.S. economy.
Thursday, March 14
- U.S. Producer Price Index – 8:30 a.m.: Similar to the CPI numbers released earlier in the week, but particularly highlighting the change in price of finished goods.
- U.S. Retail Sales Data – 8:30 a.m.: The monthly change in retail sales. An obvious indicator of consumer spending, and may be a leading indicator of economic recovery. When things are good, people spend money and buy things.
- U.S. Weekly Unemployment Claims – 8:30 a.m.: The number of individuals claiming for unemployment benefits.
Friday, March 15
- U.S. New York Manufacturing Index – 8:30 a.m.: A survey of roughly 200 manufacturers in New York state rating the overall state of business conditions. Conditions in NY can often be used as a good indicator of the way the entire country may be swinging.
