I’ve been a big proponent of outdoor battery-powered tools for many years. I was one of the first to write about the EGO Power+ lawnmower in Canada all the way back in 2014. I also tested some of the first battery-operated snow blowers from Ryobi and Snow Joe the following year. Battery-powered outdoor tools are just easier to use and maintain, and they’ve definitely gotten more powerful over the last 10 years.
Other shoppers must agree because The Home Depot expects that by the end of their fiscal year 2028 more than 85 per cent of outdoor power equipment sold at their stores in Canada and the U.S. will be battery-powered. Mainly lawnmowers, trimmers and leaf blowers.
To get to this number, the big box home improvement chain is planning to boost their “leadership position in battery technology” to offer cordless battery-powered outdoor tools from Ryobi, Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt, Echo, Toro and other brands (although they no longer sell EGO Power+ in Canada as that is now exclusive to Rona and Lowe’s).
According to their press release, Home Depot says this push for rechargeable battery-powered outdoor tools will help “reduce annually over 2,000,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases from exhaust pipes of residential lawn equipment.”
The press release also states that “using a gas-powered lawn mower for an hour creates as much air pollution as driving over 400 kilometres in an average car. Running a gas leaf blower for an hour is equal to a 1,770-kilometre drive or driving from Toronto to Prince Edward Island, Canada.”
Besides being more eco-friendly, your neighbours won’t yell at you when you decide to mow your lawn at 8 a.m. on a Saturday with a battery-powered mower.
