The American Film Institute (AFI) is a non-profit organization that helps preserve important American films. They’ve released many special lists over the years, such as the Top 100 Movies, Top 100 Thrills, Top 100 Laughs, and so on.
Each year the AFI pick their Top 10 movies of the year list, which they hold an awards event for every January. Elvis, The Fabelmans, and Everything Everywhere All at Once made the 2022 list, along with a few surprises like She Said, Nope and Top Gun: Maverick.
For 2023 the AFI has mostly played it safe with their picks and nothing on the list is that much of a surprise.
You’ve got the trifecta of Barbie, Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon, which are all sure to clean up at the Golden Globes, Oscars and every other awards ceremony next year.
The Holdovers also made the cut as did two Netflix films – Maestro and May December.
